Gone are the days when photography was viewed as an arduous and expensive hobby, or even a profession to master. The introduction of digital cameras has successfully broadened the spectrum of photography aficionados, with the affordability and convenience it has brought into the field. With the use of electronic devise to capture images in binary data, digital cameras allow the photographer a plethora of time and money saving alternatives, where he can view his photograph even before he prints it out, sort through the images to only save the appropriate ones and delete the rest and even upload the images directly onto his computer. This invariably allows the photographer a lot more freedom to experiment and explore, while also saving on the amount of time it would have cost him to scan individual pictures to his laptop. Present-day digital cameras also offer a multitude of image and lighting options to the user, letting him achieve what he once regarded as very difficult or even impossible.

To get started with your digital camera, it is vital that you learn about what goes into its functioning. A majority of the cameras which are available today, are equipped with a Liquid Crystal Display, which is essentially similar in it's working to the conventional viewfinder. Only, it offers the user even more benefits like viewing the picture, both before and after it is shot to fine tune the details or even shoot another one, if the final result is unsatisfactory. The photographs that you take with digital cameras are made up of thousands of mega pixels, which in turn are comprised of a million pixels or picture elements each. This allows for a lot more clarity and finer detailing than conventional photography. Also, when you work with a digital camera, it is important that you learn how to operate the shutter-release mechanism, which needs to be pressed twice, once in order to lock the exposure and focus adjustments and the second time to capture the image. Digital Cameras are also particularly prone to the 'Camera Shake', which may result in a blurred or distorted image.

Most cameras are set by default to an automatic ISO setting which means that the camera automatically adjusts the ISO as per the light conditions. However, you can even adjust the ISO manually, as per the effect you are looking to create, which will also allow you to reduce the noise in the image. Here, the most important thing to remember is that the ISO setting and the light conditions are inversely related the brighter the light, the lower the ISO and vice versa. If you still find the resultant image noisy, that is you find random speckles dotting your image, you can even choose to work with the noise reduction tool, but doing so will mean that you are compromising on the picture detailing. Also, noise is much more prominent in a lager-sized print than in a smaller one.

Many digital cameras will adapt the flash settings as per the light conditions. However, you can even do away with the flash completely and simply increase the room lighting for a more natural effect. An external flash unit, which you can either attach to your camera or use by itself as a separate entity, lets you be a lot more flexible in the way you present your image. For a more subtle result, you can also point the flash upwards to allow the light to bounce off the walls and ceiling instead of directly on the subject. Backlighting should be avoided, unless you are looking to silhouette the subject of your photograph. What's more, you can even vary the level of illumination within the same picture by first illuminating the surroundings and then using an additional fill-in flash to highlight the subject in the foreground.

If you are looking to capture a rapidly moving object, you can activate the 'Burst Mode' on your camera. This will let you take multiple pictures in a rapid sequence, while you simply press down on the Shutter Release button. You can also increase the intensity of the color while capturing your images, to produce more vivid hues. You may also want to activate the Macro mode if you want to click a close up of a small object. Closing in, without making this adjustment may bring your subject out of focus. Digital cameras are also enhanced with Optical Zoom, where the focal length of the lens extends and retracts to let the image be magnified by the lens itself, while keeping the resolution intact, to produce images of the finest quality.

Sometimes, despite your best efforts to capture a crystal clear image, you may find that your photograph still appears slightly hazy. Here, the problem lies, not in the method in which you choose to capture the image, but in the way you hold the camera itself. Many cameras, which are equipped with only the LCD, do not allow you to hold the camera to your eye, as you would were it outfitted with a viewfinder as well. In these situations, you have to hold the camera at an arm's length to be able to focus on the LCD which invariably leads the camera to shake due to an unsteady stance. And hence it is essential that you keep this is mind when you set out to buy your next digital camera.

The best way to get started with your digital camera is to thoroughly read the manual. This will allow you to learn just what your camera's fortes and limitations are, thus building a strong base for you to experiment on. If you simply rush though the quick start, all you will achieve are far-from-perfect snapshots. After a comprehensive study of the detailed, full-fledged manual, begin to experiment with your pictures while referring to the manual for specifics. And then click away. The best part about a digital camera is that it lets you practice as much as you need to without splurging on film and having to worry about stopping in between to upload. And if you spot as much as a minute detail when previewing the picture, hoist the camera up again, and shoot some more pictures! Also the compact size of the camera ensures that you never have to worry about the inconvenience of lugging it around a welcome advantage when you set off on long trips. If you're still sitting around with that fine piece of equipment stop pondering and get started at once! Before you know it, you'll be the proud owner of photographs that would make Ansel Adams proud!
