How to Use the 3 Depths of Creativity to Keep Your Creativity Freely Flowing

When we create, there are many different depths to both what we're creating, how we're creating, and why we're creating. By using a combination of these, you can keep your creativity fresh and flowing.

Depth 1: Fun and Frivolous. This is where you're creating with the main motivation to just enjoy the creative process. The creative projects here are small and fast, you create on a whim, and follow wherever your curiosity takes you. The detail of planning beforehand is low to non-existent, you just pick up your creative tools with a willingness to explore, a handful of starting points and just create. Often you're also trying new techniques, learning as you create.

Why it's good to create at this depth: This type of creating gets you back in touch with the pure enjoyment of creating, something we often lose as we get caught up in trying to be too precise or perfect, or taking on too many or too complicated projects at once. A quick burst of this kind of creating reconnects you with the curious artist in you in its most engaging and playful form.

Depth 2: Deeper Meaning. Here there's still the motivation of enjoyment and exploration in your creativity, but the projects tend to be longer and more planned. You might start a new creative venture only once you have a few ideas formed and have a vision of how you'd like what you're creating to turn out. There's a little more of the thinking you in this type of creating, less of the purely instinct driven you.

Why it's good to create at this depth: You retain the enjoyable elements of Depth 1, and add a little more challenge, which is important to your evolution as an artist. Also, the longer more involved projects you take on at this level will be more fulfilling to see completed, and you'll have both the pleasure of creating along the way, and the pride in creating something you know has taken a lot of time and creative commitment. And that's going to make you feel good as an artist.

Depth 3. Self Discovery. This is about creating what you really long to create, what you're called to create. It's the art that will define you, and help you understand your place in the world. This kind of creating you simply can't ignore, though many of us try. There's no substitute for the self discovery and reward you experience when you listen to yourself and create straight from the heart, without fear or censor.

Why it's good to create at this depth: You can create some wonderful projects at the other two levels. But unless you also create some of the deeper work that you know you need to create, you'll always feel a little unfulfilled. It's like always eating sweets and sugary snacks, when really you want to sit down and savour a delicious 3 course meal with stimulating company. This is the type of creating you owe it to yourself, to your waiting audience, and to the rest of the world to create.

These 3 depths of creating all have their purpose and by combining them all over a period of time, you'll give yourself the most fulfilling creative experiences.

Focus too much on one and you can get bored, or stuck in a rut. Keep mixing it up and you'll keep your creativity stimulated and flowing, as well as learning a lot more about yourself along the way.
