Creative Ideas - How to Tap Into Your Endless Supply of Creative Ideas
By Dan Goodwin
One of the most common reasons we don't create more is we feel we don't have any good ideas. In fact often it seems we don't have ANY ideas - good, bad or indifferent!
This perception is actually not a fair reflection of what's actually happening.
The reality is that we all have a constant flow of creative ideas. You can not turn off your creativity, it whirrs away constantly in the background, whether you notice it or not.
When you feel you don't have any ideas, what actually is happening is you're just not capturing any of these ideas.
How often do you have an idea, think to yourself "Hey this is an idea with real potential, I'll remember it and work on it later..." then hours or even days later you vaguely remember having some good idea, but you can't think what it was? This happens many times an hour, possibly even many times a second!
Saying you never have any creative ideas is similar to sitting by a raging river and complaining you're thirsty and don't know where to get a drink!
So, how can you tap into your own "raging river" of creative ideas?
As we've already touched upon, capturing the ideas is the key. The best way to do this is to carry with you at all times a notebook, or a camera, or a sound recorder. Or a device that has all three!
Then as soon as you have an idea, get it down. Right there and then in that moment while it's fresh and hot.
If you follow this technique for just a couple of weeks you'll quickly gather up a great collection of creative ideas.
What you'll also find is that the more you capture ideas, the more ideas you'll see around you. Because you've given your creativity the green light to openly present you with its ideas, it will happily oblige.
Previously, although your creative mind was generating ideas, it was doing so in the background, trying to keep them hidden from you like some unspeakable secret.
Now, because you're collecting up your ideas, your creative mind will present more and more to you with the enthusiasm of a puppy fetching a stick over and over again.
Another wonderful side effect is that when you have ideas collected in one place, they naturally breed and feed off one another.
For example, with ideas in a notebook, you can then be flicking back through your ideas and find two or more that combine in your mind to spark off other new ideas, even more interesting than the original ones.
Plus each idea you capture will have dozens if not hundreds of possible variations. The original idea is just your starting point. With a little extra creative brainstorming you can very quickly produce a whole host of other ideas. But only if you capture that first one!
Start capturing YOUR creative ideas today. It could prove to be the best thing you've done to increase your creativity in years.
