What is the meaning of the number at the end of the picture name?

: starstarstarstarstar

The 8 digit number behind the image name can simply be seen as a product id or catalog number.

Trust an ex programmer to invent such a catalogue number. Smile

It is made up as follows:

The first five digits is simply the date in ymmdd (year, month, day) format and the last three digits is a sequential number starting at 0 indicating the number of the image created on that day. The number 50901010 is therefor the tenth image created on the 1st of September 2005. There are no images older than 2005 so the century part can be omitted and the numbering system from 2010 and later still have to be decided on.

The artist  tend to select some source material and then to produce a number of variations from the particular source material which is called a series. The series is given a name and the number is used to identify a particular image within a series. Quite often the date will uniquely identify a series but this is not necessarily the case, the artist often work on more than one series in a day.

When you browse the gallery you will notice some names followed by 5 digit numbers (the date part). This notation is used to identify sub-albums or galleries and simply indicates that more variations of that series can be found in the sub-gallery.

Numbers are never re-used. Once an image has its number assigned it gets recorded in a database. Even if we decide that the image is not usable its state is just changed in the master database to 'retired'.  If the artist later decides to continue with the series he will either use the next available number for the series date, or assign a new series name and start date. A series name and date will also always be unique, which means that Abstract 50901 and Abstract 70405 are two different series although they have the same name.

Remember that the eight digit number is unique, you don't need the name. If you like an image make a note of its number, you can then easily find it again in the gallery or shop with the search facility.
